Steps to Salvation
Blue | Step 5
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9
Here is a very important reference to both the lost and the saved person:
It is a call to the lost to stop trying to earn salvation and eternal life from God. It is a gift God has already provided through Jesus Christ, not something one can obtain through good works (though one may do many wonderful things).
It is a call to the saved to not become boastful in ones thoughts and deeds, somehow believing one has obtained salvation and eternal life through their own merit. It is a gift of God, through faith in the work of Jesus Christ, given by grace (unmerited favor) unto all who repent and believe.
