Steps to Salvation
Blue | Step 2
For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
Ecclesiastes 7:20
Ecclesiastes 7:20 informs us that:
The word just is associated with truth, as in a truthful person guided by truth. For God to tell man—every male and female—that we are not truthful or guided by truth is a big deal.
The word good is the polar opposite of bad, just as it is evil. What does God mean when he says that we—both men and women—do not do good?
The Westminster Shorter Catechism asks the question, "What is sin?" It then defines it as "any want of conformity unto, or transgression of, the law of God."
Pilate asked Jesus Christ, "What is truth?" The Word of God—both the written and living—is Truth. When we do not know or obey Scripture, we cannot walk as a just man, abiding in truth. We cannot do good nor avoid sin without knowing the Truth. We cannot live perfect, sinless lives in and of ourselves, our spirits must be quickened by repentance, faith in Christ, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
