Steps to Salvation
Blue | Step 4

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
John 1:12

But as many as received him...even to them that believe on his name:

Who are the many, the them in this passage?
It is humanity: men and women, boys and girls, you and me.

We must receive him, believe on his name for what purpose?
To become the sons of God.

What does it mean to become a son (or daughter) of God?
It means we have an adoptive relationship with our Father in Heaven. We are no longer a child of sin, a child of the devil. We have been "born again" spiritually, having once been born of water (our fleshly birth) and now born of the spirit (regeneration | John 3).

However, we cannot become a son (or daughter) of God without first receiving one, believing on his name. So then, we must know who to receive, upon whose name to believe. It is none other than the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. (Acts 4:7-12).

To believe on Christ is much more than simply believing in Jesus. Just as receiving Christ is more than merely asking Jesus to come into our hearts. We must turn from sin and put all our hope—all that we are, and all of eternity—into the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ. Without him we are lost.
