What does the Bible say about your money?

Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9:7

Sometimes people think the only thing the church really wants is your money. Maybe that is true in some cases, but it surely isn't a fact for all or even most churches. Money is simply a necessity if the church is going to be able to minister to its members and society. It definitely shouldn't be the main focus, and sure it can be abused, but just as it is needed in most every aspect of human life, it is relevant in the Christian community as well.

So, let's take a look at this verse in a couple of ways:

First | We notice we should not be or need to be browbeat or coerced into giving to our local church and/or other opportunities for the cause of Christ. It should be because we have a desire to give, from within our own hearts. A giving back a portion for all God has given (and does give) daily to us that we could never fully repay.

Second | Our giving should not be limited to monetary means. Surely you have heard "time is money," so why should we not also give our of time to serve in our local church and/or other opportunities for the cause of Christ? I am not advocating that serving replaces our responsibility to God to give of our money, but rather that we do something in addition to only giving our money.

When we get involved in something that consumes both our time and our money, we are more likely to put our whole heart into it. How about we do something to draw others to Christ. God has promised to reward us for every good work done in faith. Let us give, because we have been freely given so much in and through Christ.
