What does the Bible say about holiness?

Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
1 Peter 1:16

As Christians, we sometimes want to play-down this verse. We would like to think it means "be as good as you can," but that isn't what it says.

Who is the I in this verse?
Verse 15 states it is "he which hath called you."

Who is it that calls us; the ye in the above verse?
It is God. [Romans 8:28-30; 2 Timothy 1:8-11]

How holy is God?
Throughout scripture God is called "Holy, holy, holy." [Isaiah 6:3]

God is calling us to be holy; that is to be without sin. We may claim or understand as humans we cannot obtain such a degree of perfection as our heavenly Father, but that in no way diminishes or changes the command. We must not lower to expectation or standard to sinful man, but raise it to the height for which it is meant: Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who "was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin." [Hebrews 4:15] For, it is written, we are to "be conformed to the image of his Son."
